Where is the Polling Interval parameter ?

Postby jehanzeb on 07.07.2009 07:58

Hi Gregoire!
I have recently installed the NTP service and the Time Server Monitor.

My question is regarding the time update 'polling' interval.

I looked at the 'ntp_cheat_sheet.pdf' and noticed the only setting
for the polling interval is a switch called 'minpoll'.

Currently it is set to 'minpoll 4=16s' in the NTP.conf file.

My question is where is this setting within the GUI itself, instead of the Conf file ?

Also, how can I confirm that the NTP Time Servers are being contacted every 16 seconds
and time corrected accordingly ?

Thank you for your time!

Hi,

My question is where is this setting within the GUI itself, instead of the Conf file ?

This setting is only available in the ntp.conf file. This means you have to insert the MINPOLL and MAXPOLL parameter after your server address of each entries.
e.g.:
server 172.16.3.123 iburst MINPOLL 4 MAXPOLL 4

The line above will set the polling intervall to 16 seconds. If you just use the MINPOLL parameter it might happen that NTP increase the intervall autonomous to up to 1024 seconds.

If you use the NTP conf generator to generate your config you can set the MINPOLL and MAXPOLL parameter within the GUI.

Also, how can I confirm that the NTP Time Servers are being contacted every 16 seconds
and time corrected accordingly ?

On the status page of the NTP Time Server Monitor.
The column poll reflect the current polling interval for each server. If you see a green line on the status page then this server is selected for synchronization and your sytem time should be corrected accordingly. See laso the status line above the status table.

Best regards
Gregoire
